You can make a lot of money as an affiliate marketing other people’s products. Or… you can be left wondering why, despite all your efforts, no one has purchased through your links. Here are 10 things you need to have right.

First, Identify Your Target Audience

Start by identifying potential customers before actually promoting your affiliate product. FIguring out beforehand who you need and who are likeliest to buy the product you are promoting will save you a lot of wasted time and effort.

Construct Your Website for the Target Audience

You must have a website. Don’t just try to direct traffic to the merchant’s product website. But don’t invest in constructing a website and then try to figure out how to get your audience to visit it. Know your audience well and then construct the site to be attractive to them. Much of your competition will be lazy and will use the exact same sales pages as all the other affiliates. Be different.

Buzz Your Website

Become interested in what is “in.” Then rather than setting up a website about your favorite hobby, which might not have broad appeal, cultivate your interest in those things that are hot and happening and find related products to promote. Become a specialist in what’s hot then create websites with automatic buzz!

Think Positive, Be Realistic and Stay Focused

Think positive but don’t get caught up in the online hype, expecting to become super-rich very quickly. Remain focused on one thing at a time. Being positive is good, but setting realistic goals is vital.

Get Your Knowledge Base Right

You can cripple your business by not expanding your knowledge. Become an expert in both the product you are promoting and the problem it’s designed to solve.

Use AdWords Cautiously

Set your budget cautiously and don’t overspend. But this powerful marketing tool can be used wisely both to earn more in commissions than its PPC costs and to work out what keywords will get you traffic and what is just too competitive.

Be Your Own Author

If possible, write your own ads, articles and reviews rather than using the ones supplied by the publishers’ affiliate programs. This way, you will set yourself apart from the other affiliates and will come across as genuine.

Match Affiliate Programs

Do not under any circumstances cross-promote unrelated material. If you want to promote a new affiliate program on dog training, don’t do it on your photography website. Some of your photographer subscribers might want to train their dogs, but for most it will simply destroy your credibility.

Build Your List

Capture your visitor’s details before passing them on to the affiliate merchant’s sales page. Give away content, such as a subscription to a newsletter. Follow up. Keep them involved. Their long term value to you will be huge.

Targeted Traffic

Imagine yourself as the person who has the problem this product is designed to solve. This will give you insight into how your prospects will look for the solution. Then do the things to you need to do to ensure that you are the one they find.

As an affiliate marketer, it is very important to ensure that your affiliate site can generate income for you. Of course it will be impossible for each of your websites to become a cash cow. However, you have to make sure that a site at least contributes something to you.

You will be using your affiliate site to pre-sell your visitors. If your site can contribute, it will make some conversions. In fact, you have to make your site interesting in order to attract visitors. And you will only have conversions if the visitors click the affiliate links and purchase at the sponsor’s website.

In most cases you will try to make your affiliate site a theme content site. You can probably guess that this means your site should have a main theme. The theme of the site should reflect the products you are promoting. If you are promoting financial products such as personal loans, for example, you’ll need to create a website on finance or loans.

It is essential to understand that a single website should only focus on one theme. It is very difficult to make a multi-theme site make money. If you are going to promote a few products under different niches, your best option will be to create a few different sites.

When you register the domain for your site, you should choose the domain name with extra care. If it’s possible, try to get a domain that reflects your site’s main theme. Try to choose a name that includes one or more of your site’s keywords. This will also help when you are doing your SEO work.

You should always remember that you are pre-selling the affiliate products or services. Some marketers will be inclined to sell the products. However, that’s not your job. The sponsor will sell the products. Try to do that yourself and you will only fail.

SEO is another very important part if you want to get free traffic from search engines. Some advanced marketers prefer to focus on tweaking their PPC campaigns instead. However, PPC campaigns will certainly mean expenses and you should only go for that when you have the budget and affiliate marketing experience.

By Jerry Holliday

The attraction of owning affiliate ecommerce stores is pretty obvious to anyone looking to make money through affiliate programs. Firstly, you can have multiple categories, all creating an income. Then you actually have your own website whereby you can capture email addresses if you want and build your list. Then third, you have the benefit of search engine food for the spiders giving you organic search result traffic.

One mistake that many new affiliate store owners make is creating their affiliate stores themselves. They then usually end up spending large amounts of time trying to overcome technical problems they have no expertise in.

I did this myself many years ago. I built an affiliate superstore that sold everything under the sun from A to Z — what a mistake! Even when the site was finished, the earlier pages needed updating because the merchant had changed something, like the price or picture, or even discontinued the product entirely. This would created bad links scattered throughout the store. Needless to say, I gave up on that particular project.

Even if you outsource and pay a programmer to build your affiliate ecommerce website, you could be looking at a small fortune before you even get started.

The allure of having your own multi-product store, however, is very strong. Any affiliate marketer understands that the more products you are able to promote, the more commission checks will come flooding through your mailbox. If you’re currently just promoting one or two programs at a time, it might be worthwhile to explore a new option that will allow you to increase your profits more than you ever thought possible.

Internet commerce has created more opportunities for affiliate marketers than any other business program ever has — the opportunity to have an entire ecommerce online storefront, full of products you can make commissions off of, all within whatever niche you choose!

We, as affiliate marketers, are living in exciting times because now, having our own multiple ecommerce online stores is a lot simpler thanks to wonderful data feeds. These feeds can display products from many different merchant stores, giving your store unique content footprint for the search engines to follow.

Data feeds are very similar to the RSS feeds used by blogs. The way the merchant feeds work is they display constantly updating descriptions, pictures, and prices of their products. Affiliate marketers are then able to then integrate these feeds into their own ecommerce store and rake in the commissions!

By William Hutchinson

Two industries that are often misunderstood are affiliate marketing and traffic exchanges. Let’s take a look at how you should use both to make more money online.

We could probably summarize this article in one sentence: When you use traffic exchanges, go for the lead as opposed to going for the sale. What we mean by that is promoting your affiliate marketing website is not the best way to utilize traffic exchanges.

What you want to do is go for the lead, meaning capturing contact information by giving away something of value such as a free report or ebook. This contact information is normally sent to an autoresponder where you can then follow up over and over for future sales. You know that you have a minimum amount of time for your page to be displayed if you have ever clicked on a traffic exchange. This is another problem with promoting your affiliate website itself.

People just do not have enough time or the attention span to sit and read a sales letter. But they will have enough time to quickly read a short splash page that hits a few high points and at the end has a sign-up box where they can put their name and email address. To do this you will need to create a landing page that is attractive enough to encourage your reader to give you their contact information. This is also an excellent place to brand yourself by including a header.

You might even go so far as to put your picture in the header or on the landing page itself. As you develop campaigns in various traffic exchanges, you will be branding yourself as well as trying to build a list for future follow-up.

This is such a simple concept that it really is amazing that more people do not do it. We have all seen many different things promoted in traffic exchanges. Think about what captures your attention and maybe ones that you have actually clicked on or joined before.

Very few of us ever buy a product off of the traffic exchanges. But we do sign up for free reports and ebooks, which then get us on a list where we begin to receive email. It’s off of these emails that we may very well buy a product from an affiliate marketer. This is the secret few people seem to really understand.

The right way to use affiliate marketing and traffic exchanges is to go for the lead, and then follow-up for a sale at a later date.

William Hutchinson publishes Hutches Affiliate Marketing where you can find the top affiliate programs and where he will show you how to make money online and help you start your own Internet business or develop a few work-from-home ideas.

By Michael Pergrem

There are tons of ways to use Internet marketing to make money online. One of the best and most reliable ways is PPC marketing. PPC (pay per click) marketing is a powerful tool in the hands of an affiliate marketer. You can get a constant stream of visitors to your site and increase ROI (return on investment) by more than 300%!

The biggest PPC marketing showcase is Google. You may have noticed a column of ads on the right hand side of your search page. Those are PPC ads. People sign up for Google AdWords, create those ads and they are shown on Google under specific keywords.

The AdWords user must pay Google every time someone clicks on his ad. The cost per click varies and depends on the keyword competition. A low competition keyword may cost you a few pennies per click. A more competitive keyword, on the other hand, may cost you 30 cents to a dollar per click.

The most popular way to make money with PPC is with affiliate marketing. PPC allows you to send people straight to a sales page. If that person buys the product, you get your commission. Unfortunately it is a little more complicated than that. You have to be aware of your cost to make sure you do not spend more money on clicks than you get in commissions. A lot of people never use PPC because they are afraid of losing money. The truth is, if you manage your account correctly you can make a lot of money using PPC.

If you are advertising something that will make you $25 a sale, then you need to learn the conversion rate of the site. Most sites will gladly give you this information if you email them.

Let’s say the site converts 2% of the people that visit it. So it is safe to assume that one out of every 50 people will make a purchase. You should not pay any more than 50 cents per click. 50 cents will get exactly 50 people there with $25. As long as you do not pay too much for your ads, you will not lose much money. By sticking to those guidelines you greatly reduce any risk of losing money.

The best thing about PPC is that when you get a successful ad running, you can set it on autopilot and it will continue to make money for you. If you get several successful ads running on autopilot you will really see a substantial amount of money come in. This is called continual income and it is great because you make money all day and night, even while you sleep!

Anyone can make money with PPC. All it takes is knowledge, research, and the will to succeed. If you want to increase your affiliate checks and make more money, PPC is for you.

The logical step to do when starting an online business is to turn to eBay. I personally started selling on eBay, but unless you have a lot of money to invest and storage space, it is a very hard way to earn money. But by browsing around, I came across affiliate marketing, and with that I learned about building niche store websites that feed directly off eBay.

Even though it seems easy at first, it actually is not. Setting up the site is very easy, but the hard work comes when promoting that site. And that is the job of the affiliate marketer.

I promote my sites the free way, and that is where the hard work comes in! A website without promotion is nothing. Also, a website not associated with the proper search engine keywords is going to be very hard to promote.

To be a successful affiliate marketer, you need to really work it. If you are not willing to pay for traffic then you have to have around 20 hours a week to spend on this business. The more time you have, the more money you can make.

But if you are totally new to this, there is a learning curve you need to go through. You need to learn about SEO, keywords, site optimization and promotion. The cost of doing business is very low. The profits can be large, but only if you set it up right!

Out of every 100 visitors you get to your website, you will get 1-3 sales. But only if the traffic to your site is targeted traffic. With an affiliate Web store, yes, there is no inventory to keep, but you have to know exactly which products to promote to make money and you have to know how to promote it.

This article is lacking (programs that provide residual income aren’t necessarily MLM), but the tips provided on evaluating programs you’re thinking of joining are good and worth noting. — EF

By Daegan Smith

There are a lot of affiliate programs over the Internet and most all of them promise good income. But would they really work? Are the things those companies claim totally true or are most of them purely hype?

What are residual income affiliate programs?

These are special types of affiliate programs that can provide income to a person virtually for the rest of his life. Residual income means you will earn from the program even after you have long abandoned working for it. This is because you will forever be part of the network and your position on the company’s marketing tree is forever secured.

To learn more about this, read about MLMs or multi level marketing systems, which when integrated into a simple affiliate program becomes a residual income generator.

How do you know if a residual income affiliate program is good?

You will know if a program works as promised by doing a background check on the company, its members, and the rest of the community. The parent company has to be long-established, credible, and an accepted affiliate company. Stay away from fly-by-night affiliate programs that only want you to promote their links but don’t really have the intention of ultimately paying you for your efforts.

Before you join an affiliate program, first try looking for some previous, old, and new members. If these members are satisfied with their commissions, how punctually they are paid, and how accurate the program’s tracking computations and reports are, then you may have just found the perfect program for you. You should also ask about the support the company provides, their delivery system, and everything else about the image of the company. Generally, the members should be happy with it.

Try to search the Internet for the affiliate parent company and any positive and negative feedback. You want to know how the company is perceived over the online community. Are they referred to as spammers? Do they use hideous marketing tactics that irritate customers? If so, you don’t want to be associated with these people.

By Fabian Tan

Affiliate marketing requires a well-maintained and updated affiliate management and outsourcing network. A successful affiliate program requires indefatigable hard work and commitment. To avoid spam, false, and rogue affiliates, an affiliate manager must be chosen who will manage all your affiliate marketing programs and perform various other duties and services.

Services of an Affiliate Manager

An Affiliate Manager is responsible for various services, which include:

Managing and improving affiliate programs

Recruiting new affiliates

Providing promotional and incentive measures

Providing training and information on products or services

Keeping in touch with top affiliates

Program Management Outsourcing

Outsourced Program Managers (OPMs) are the experienced affiliate managers of the affiliate marketing industry. These managers operate in an independent capacity as contractors and prove beneficial to merchants. The OPMs don’t incur any benefit, training, or office expenses from the merchant.

Apart from the services above, these managers can also consult on the behalf of the merchant. Other services of OPMs include program launch services, single-run affiliate recruitment, and optimization of affiliate programs. These experienced affiliate managers charge around $2,000 to $10,000 (approx.) a month depending on their know-how and manageability.

In affiliate marketing, affiliate managers work like a connecting thread between the merchants and the customers. The OPMs and affiliate managers work in accordance with proper and well-entrenched affiliate programs for a firm. These managers do not require any prior training or education, but it may prove an added advantage. The success of a firm also depends on the dedication and positive attitude of its affiliate manager.

This is not easy at first, but this business can be a well worth it. It requires work, but it’s probably the easiest way to make money off eBay.

Here are 4 basic steps to eBay affiliate marketing profits.

Step 1. You need a smaller niche,. And you need more than one store to promote. Large sites by established affiliate marketers are very hard to compete against; the small niche markets are where we can earn money.

Step 2. The second thing you need is a software to build your eBay affiliate websites. Almost all very successful eBay affiliate marketers make their money from niche stores and small markets. You’ll of course want good software that does not cost a lot (Build A Niche Store software, for example, only costs a one-time $97).

Step 3. You have to understand that the easy part is actually building the sites; the harder work is in keyword research and promoting those sites. Keywords seem easy at first, but they are a lot more complicated, trying to get your ads and links to rank higher for the specific keywords that are very specific and at the last leg of a purchasing cycle.

Step 4. Promote your sites. Interestingly, your promotion activities help you rank higher for the keywords and drive a lot more traffic through to your sites. Targeted traffic is what is going to make you money. If you are not going to invest money into traffic, you will pay for it with your time. To make a success of this business, you really need to work at it at least 20 hours per week.

Making money off eBay has never been easier; it just takes a little time and effort to make it work.

By John Hartley

Do you enjoy a glass of wine? Know your Bordeaux from Cabernet Sauvignon? Well, why not put that knowledge to good use and get into wine affiliate marketing? Actually, you do not need to be a wine expert, but it helps if you drink wine now and again as you will be able to match up the product and the market first.

As always with affiliate marketing, start off by researching the market. For a product like wine, it would be useful to start at Amazon to see what books on wine are selling well, and how the best seller ranks overall among non-fiction books. This will also give you an idea of what types of wine are popular at present. You will need to market both white and red wine, though.

Choose wines that can be delivered to your region

The wines you decide to market would depend where you wanted to market them, quite simply because wines need to be delivered to the customer. If you are living in North America then google.com is your starting point, but in Australia it would be google.com.au, and in the UK google.co.uk, and so on.

Of course, you can’t find wine products in Clickbank, except perhaps a book about wine, which would be worth using as an upsell. You need to go to Commission Junction or Linkshare or another affiliate marketing network that handles tangible products to find wines.

What type of wine will you market?

Once you have ascertained that there is a market, and there are wine sellers who market through affiliates, the question is what type of wine to market. You will probably do better with party wines, which are cheap, because more people are likely to want to buy a case of wine for parties than for their ‘wine cellar.’

This is still a small niche, but the volume should be quite good. Of course, you need to market where party-goers hang out. This is probably on sites like Squidoo and Hubpages, rather than in forums, but no doubt there are forums for wine drinkers.

What the wine people want for parties are the younger wines where consistency is more important than the depth of the wine, and the bouquet is not at all important. In other words, these are the cheaper wines, but preferably from good regions where consistency is valued, such as California or Australia. You can also get some good cheap Spanish wines that are ideal for parties. Some of the wines from the south of France are also quite good, but the Italian wines tend to be less consistent in quality.

If you enjoy wine, you will find that wine affiliate marketing can be fun, and profitable.
